A mortgage can be the largest financial decision a person can make in their entire life. And as some mortgages can last up to 35 years, which is longer than many marriages, it can also be the longest commitment that many people ever make. In the United States, some federal programs are available to help make home loans more affordable. The Federal Housing Administration insures some loans for a very low rate, only requiring a three percent down payment. The Veterans Administration also has loans that are available for those that have served time in the armed forces. The terms on the loans are usually very generous, providing for a 0% down payment. If you live in the United States, you should check and see if you are covered by either of these programs, as they are most likely the best mortgage deal that you can find.
